The River Wye
At around 130 miles long, the River Wye flows from the source at Plynlimon in mid Wales to the Severn estuary and is the fifth longest river in the UK. The Wye is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Historically renowned for salmon fishing, the Wye is now regarded as one of the top barbel fisheries in the country.

The Backney Fishery has been owned by one family for several generations and is one of the first fisheries on the Wye to be offered for sale as an established barbel and coarse fishery managed on a day ticket basis.

The Backney Fishery
Located approximately 2 miles upstream of Ross-on-Wye, Backney offers a stunning stretch of approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) of double bank fishing. The fishery divides into two beats (Upper and Lower) and is managed as a day ticket fishery with an online booking system.

Salmon fishing is permitted between the 15th March and the 15th June and coarse fishing from the 16th June to the 14th March.

Upper Backney
Consisting of approximately 1,050m (0.65 miles) of double bank fishing. This section of the Wye is deep and slow with numerous swims from which to target the barbel and chub, as well as the benefit of 4 salmon cribs. This part of the river also holds good numbers of pike and small numbers of large carp. Grayling, dace and roach are also present.

Lower Backney
The lower beat extends to approximately 750m (0.46 miles) of double bank fishing. At the upper end of the beat the river quickens as it slides around a big right turn. Here is "the Monument", a very popular spot for coarse fishermen which has open banks and easy access through Backney Common.

Wading is also possible for those wanting to trot and in addition to the barbel and chub, grayling, trout, dace and roach are also present. The bridge pool at the bottom end of the beat is deep and slow, but also a good spot for barbel and chub.

Access and Car Parking
Access to the Lower Backney beat is from the layby opposite the Parish Council car park at point A on the sale plan.

Access to the Upper Backney beat is over a short stretch of agricultural land (right or south side of the hedge) with an adjacent layby for car parking at point B on the sale plan.

Although the fishing is double bank access is via the right (north) bank only. Access to the south bank is currently by boat.

Catch Records
The Backney fishery is a mixed fishery, with notable specimens caught to date including; barbel to 13lbs, chub to 7lbs (numerous 5lbs+), a small number of river carp to 20lbs, pike to 30lbs, salmon to just under 30lbs.

Salmon fishing Season 3rd March-17th October.
Trout Fishing Season 3rd March-30th September.
Coarse (Rivers) Season 16th June-14th March.

The Business
The Backney Fishery was originally marketed through the Wye and Usk Foundation. It now has it's own website and booking system. Gross tickets sales for the year ending 2018/2019 were approx. £8,000.

The website and booking system are included in the sale - backneyfisherywye.co.uk.
