St Michael on the Mount is Grade II* listed as being of Special Architectural and Historic Interest. The prominent cityscape tower dates from circa 1460. The remainder of the Church was redesigned and reconstructed in Georgian Gothic Revival style by Thomas Paty between 1775-1777. The church was refurnished during the late 19th century, although the structure remained unaltered. Later modifications to the building included restoration after the church was damaged by an incendiary bomb in 1941. A fire in October 2016 caused extensive damage to the church destroying the church roof. The church has been closed since 1999 with many of the internal fittings having been removed.
